The Alperton Model, or: How to get a 28% swing by talking to everyone

Our committee member Anton Georgiou has led the way on this in the Labour fiefdom of Brent in January. Starting in a rather hopeless third place needing a 20% swing to win a by-election in Alperton ward, he put together a multiracial, multilingual canvassing squad and hit the whole ward.

One BAME resident told him he'd lived there 40 years and it was the first time a Lib Dem had asked for his support. Anton managed to achieve a 28% swing and is now the first Lib Dem councillor in Brent in four years.

We believe the 'Alperton model' is the key to success for our party: rejoicing in the diversity of our society and reaching out to every community. Anton's success in Brent demonstrated that the reason so many people voted Labour was because nobody was giving them any alternative. When he showed them they had a choice, they voted Liberal Democrat.

This campaign is not merely needed in the most multiracial parts of our country: when BAME communities are a small minority they can feel even more vulnerable. If you agree then why not join our Local Parties Q&A next month by indicating your interest here!
